Plato's THE REPUBLIC

An Overview: Book Four

"...our task is to inquire into the needs of the city as a whole."

Socrates and Plato
Socrates was an Athenian philosopher who lived from 469 B.C. until 399 B.C. He traveled all around proving to people how little they really knew, using a didactic method of teaching. One of his students, Plato, was responsible for recording the Socratic dialogues in The Republic. Plato's record of Socrates' stories has provided us today with a historical and insightful philosophy.

Book IV: A Brief Sumary
Book IV of The Republic primarily deals with searching for a definition of justice, as does the rest of the work.
